We all suffer from hiccups lots of time in our life and we will suffer in upcoming life too.  Hiccups are also known as synchronous diaphragmatic flutter or singultus. It is an uncontrollable contraction of diaphragm that may repeat several times per minute. As diaphragm contracts, it makes us to breath air very quickly which is followed by sudden closure of vocal cords. This produces sound of hiccups. Hiccups can occur once or continuously.

Generally, hiccups lasts only a few minutes but in rare cases hiccups may pursuit for hours. One can buffer from tightening sensation in chest, abdomen or throat. Most often, hiccups occur due to drinking carbonated beverages or alcoholic beverages, overeating, eating quickly, eating very spicy food, some kind of emotional stress, smoking, change in room temperature.

Long term hiccups that last for hours can be due to some nerve damage, gastrointestinal conditions, infection or tumor in nervous system, metabolic disorder or some medicines. This can also be caused by anesthesia, alcoholism, diabetes, electrolyte imbalance, kidney failure, steroids and tranquilizers. In public places, hiccups can be annoying and embarrassing. Generally, hiccups go away after some time but there are many home remedies that can help in controlling hiccups.

Today I am going to share 10 natural home remedies which can help you to get rid of these hiccups problem.

  1. Cold Water:-

You can shock your body with cold water to stop hiccups. Any kind of shock will cause distraction and this will stop your hiccups.

Drink one glass of cold water mixed with honey quickly whenever you experience or feel like hiccups. You can also gargle with cold water for controlling hiccups. Sucking ice cube is also useful in this problem.

  1. Drink Upside Down:-

As drinking cold water give a shock to our body and stop hiccups. But this remedy can be more helpful if we drink water upside down. Fill a glass with cold water, bend down on your back and put your head down. Now drink the water from opposite side of glass repeats it again if you need so.

  1. Hold Your Breath:-

Holding breath is an old cure for hiccups. It increases the amount of carbon dioxide in blood, which distract the mind and stops hiccups. Take a deep breath and hold it for as long as you can exhale the breath out slowly in a controlled manner. Repeat the above steps several times until hiccups stop.

  1. Sugar:-

Sugar is a good remedy for hiccups, especially for small children who cannot do above remedies. Swallowing sugar stimulates vagus nerve and stop hiccups. Take one spoon of white or brown sugar. Hold the sugar in mouth for 5 seconds. Allow the sugar to dissolve slowly without chewing it. Then drink a sip of water. This remedy can be used for adults but people who suffer from diabetes should not use this remedy.

  1. Vinegar:-

Vinegar is an effective remedy to stop hiccups. It’s sour taste distract the mind which stops the hiccups. You can also use white, malt or apple cider vinegar. Swallow half spoon of vinegar with water. You can also mix vinegar in water.

  1. Peanut Butter:-

Peanut butter remedy is also an age old remedy for treating hiccups. The sticky, gooey consistency of peanut butter interrupts the breathing pattern which stops hiccups.

Put 1 spoon of peanut butter in mouth. Hold it for some time then swallow without chewing. Drink a glass of water if required. If peanut butter is not available, you use almond butter.

  1. Breath into a Paper Bag:-

Tested trick for stopping hiccups is breathing into a paper bag. This increases the amount of co2 in body which causes diaphragm to contract quickly for more oxygen. This helps stop hiccups.

Press a small paper bag around your mouth tightly so that external air does not go inside. Now breathe slowly ad deeply. Repeat the process several times until your overcome the hiccup until you overcome the hiccup problem.

Note:-

Patients of heart and stroke should not use this remedy. As it can be uncomfortable for some people therefore use this remedy according to one’s comfort level.

  1. Lemon:-

Lemon stop hiccups in mid stream. Sour tastes of lemon overwhelm the irritated nerves which help overcome hiccups. Put half spoon of lemon juice without mixing water in your mouth. Its strong sour taste will compel you to swallow it but you have to hold it in your mouth for some time. This will stop hiccups immediately. Another way to use it is as such- drink half glass water mixed with one spoon of lemon juice. This is somewhat less effective but is useful for hiccups. You can also such half lemon having salt sprinkle on it.

  1. Cardamom:-

Cardamom has muscle relaxing properties which help stopping hiccups. Mix one spoon of pounded cardamom in one glass of hot water. Leave it as such for 15 minutes and then strain it. Drink this mixture in case of hiccups.

  1. Chamomile:-

Chamomile also has muscle relaxant properties which reduce the contractions in diaphragm during hiccups. Make a powder of dried chamomile herb. Mix one spoon of this powder in one glass of water and drink this to get rid of the problem of hiccups.

Additional Tips:-

Distract your mind during hiccups like singing, reading or gossiping. Do not eat food quickly and eat as much as your body needs. Avoid oily, fried and spicy foods. Consult a doctor if your hiccups remain for more than few hours.
